Meet Sian & Kai: Blending Art, Life, and Landscape

For Sian and Kai, life in Tasmania is about more than just a change of scenery—it’s about slowing down, finding inspiration in nature, and creating a home that reflects their values. As the duo behind Kins Creative, their work blends seamlessly with their lifestyle, and their home is a testament to thoughtful design and intentional living.

In this Q&A, they share how Tassie’s breathtaking landscapes fuel their creativity, the story behind their favourite home features, and why the Timber Bed Frame perfectly complements their space.

What inspired you to start Kins Creative, and how does that passion carry into your living space?

We were both working independently in the creative space when we realized that combining our skills could create something much more impactful. We also genuinely enjoy working together—our strengths complement each other and elevate our work. That same attention to detail carries into our home. We’re particular about what we bring into our space, which can sometimes lead to differing opinions (haha), but it ensures our environment reflects who we are.

What’s one unexpected design detail in your home that you’re particularly proud of?

Our family table is definitely a standout. Our dining space is unique, and Sian had a very specific table in mind but couldn’t find the right one. After a month of eating on our laps, she found an old, run-down table on Marketplace. She sanded it back, stained the top, and painted the legs a colour that complements the space. It’s already hosted pancake mornings and family dinners, making it a piece full of character and memories.

Tasmania is known for its incredible landscapes—do you incorporate natural elements into your home’s design

Absolutely. One of our favourite features is the large windows that bring the outside in, surrounding us with nature and creating an airy, open feel. We also enjoy picking and drying flowers from our garden to add a seasonal touch to our spaces. It’s a simple, fun way to include Olive in the process while reflecting the beauty around us.

What does a typical day of inspiration-seeking look like for you in Tasmania?

It often starts with picking a spot on the map. Being new to the state, every drive feels like an adventure. While we plan some destinations, we’ve discovered that the most magical spots are often the unexpected ones we stumble upon along the way. Those moments of discovery inspire our creativity more than anything pre-planned.

If you could describe your home in three words, what would they be?

Quirky, warm, and inviting.

What’s one tip for blending functionality and style in a space, especially for creative types?

The space we live in directly impacts our work. Since much of our work is done from home, we prioritise creating an environment that feels good, reduces friction, and works for our needs. A functional yet aesthetic space frees up energy and inspiration for creativity.

If you had to take visitors to just one Tasmanian hidden gem, where would it be?

Tasmania is full of incredible hidden gems, but part of their magic is discovering them yourself. Explore anywhere, and you’ll find something amazing. The best and most memorable spots are often the ones you don’t expect.

Do you have a favourite local artisan, product, or material that you’ve incorporated into your home?

We’re still finding those special pieces, but our home is already filled with small treasures from our adventures—shells and mementos from the places we’ve explored.

What’s your favourite feature of the Timber Bed Frame? (The storage, the design, or something else?)

We each have a favourite! Sian loves the natural birch colour, which works with any room and gives the illusion of a larger bed—ideal when the three of us share it. Kai appreciates the perfect height and how satisfying and simple it was to assemble. For Olive, the base sticks out just enough to make a great little step for getting in and out with ease.

Sian and Kai’s home is more than just a place to live—it’s a canvas for their creativity and a sanctuary for their family. From restoring meaningful furniture to embracing the beauty of Tasmania, they’ve woven a story of connection, design, and discovery. Their journey reminds us that the best spaces are the ones that inspire and grow with us.
