If there’s one thing Jason Grant knows, it’s how to make a space feel good. With a background in magazines and a career spanning styling, design, and creative direction, his signature relaxed Australian aesthetic has shaped everything from homes to restaurants to the pages of your favourite interiors books.
He recently welcomed the Everyday Sofa in Graphite into his space, so we caught up with him to chat about storytelling through design, dream projects, and the one thing every great space needs.
What’s the key to creating a space that feels effortlessly lived-in yet thoughtfully designed?
Injecting your own point of view and personality always makes a house feel like a home.
You’ve styled so many incredible spaces—do you have a personal favourite?
Working on the motel makeovers of the Blue Water Motel, The Chalet, and The Shores Miami has been a standout. I love working with the location, embracing nostalgia, and retaining as much of the original charm as possible while making these spaces feel fresh and exciting—all with a retro, laid-back feel.
You recently added the Everyday Sofa in Graphite to your space—how’s it settling in?
It's so comfortable! I love the simplicity of the design. I love it, and so does Gertie, my Boston Terrier. The Graphite colour fits in perfectly with my coastal, nature-meets-nostalgia, eclectic home aesthetic.
What’s one underrated design choice that makes a big impact?
Simplicity. I think we tend to overcomplicate things—less is always best. I'm a big believer in quality (buying better) over quantity. Good design can’t be duped.
You’ve designed everything from homes to restaurants. Is there a dream project you haven’t tackled yet?
My own dream home build or renovation.
Your career has spanned magazines, books, styling, and design. What’s been the most unexpected part of the journey?
Falling in love with Japan. It’s really changed me for the better and given me a fresh perspective on everything. I feel like it’s the beginning of a new chapter, and the future is exciting.
What’s a styling rule you love to break?
Once you know the rules, it's okay to break them. I always like to add an unexpected item or colour to a room—it creates a visual twist and a talking point. Don’t be afraid to put your own stamp on a space. Authenticity is everything.
What’s your ultimate Sunday setup?
I love a low-key Sunday—sleep in, have coffee, swim, hang with friends by the river, enjoy an easy lunch, then another swim.
If you could swap homes with anyone for a weekend, who would it be and why?
Either the Ewok Village set high in the treetops on the forest moon of Endor (from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi) or Hirayama’s home (from Perfect Days) in one of the older neighbourhoods of Tokyo. A weekend of simple living—sounds perfect.
What’s next for you—any exciting projects on the horizon?
My travel guide app, Jason Japan, is launching soon! It’s a curated guide to the best of Japan—where to stay, eat, drink, shop, and explore, all through my lens.
